A single days passes in a blur of stingy daylight hours: By the time you sleep in, have your coffee, read a gazillion year-end features on your computer, tackle de-ornamenting the Christmas tree, vacuum, and eat the rest of the holiday chocolate candy, it\u2019s almost dark. You just manage to squeeze a walk in under that haunting pewter sky. Oh, and it\u2019s still hunting season, too, so finding and donning the orange hat, orange vest, orange doggie vest, orange everything, means the machinations of walk preparation move in slow motion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sixburnersue.com\/cooking-fresh-eating-green\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/SMQuansoo2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"800\" height=\"570\" src=\"https:\/\/sixburnersue.com\/cooking-fresh-eating-green\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/SMQuansoo2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8230\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sixburnersue.com\/cooking-fresh-eating-green\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/SMQuansoo2.jpg 800w, https:\/\/sixburnersue.com\/cooking-fresh-eating-green\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/SMQuansoo2-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sixburnersue.com\/cooking-fresh-eating-green\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/SMQuansoo2-768x547.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, if it is possible to be both dazed and stimulated, this is the week. As we reach the bottom of the calendar (I always visualize the months stacked up on top of each other) and jump back to the top again, it\u2019s hard not to be both reflective and projective. Especially when one message seems to emerge out of the gumbo of commentaries and obituaries and films and documentaries and novellas that simmer in your skillet of inspiration this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The message seems to be clear:&nbsp;<em>Carpe diem.&nbsp;<\/em>Seize the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sixburnersue.com\/cooking-fresh-eating-green\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/SMQuansoo10.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"800\" height=\"530\" src=\"https:\/\/sixburnersue.com\/cooking-fresh-eating-green\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/SMQuansoo10.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sixburnersue.com\/cooking-fresh-eating-green\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/SMQuansoo10.jpg 800w, https:\/\/sixburnersue.com\/cooking-fresh-eating-green\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/SMQuansoo10-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sixburnersue.com\/cooking-fresh-eating-green\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/SMQuansoo10-768x509.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/12\/23\/books\/joan-didion-dead.html\" target=\"_blank\">Joan Didion<\/a>, you might have heard from a thousand sources, has died, yet she seems to be speaking (or writing) from the grave at every turn. This showed up on&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CYMe_rVh8CA\/\" target=\"_blank\">@nytbooks<\/a>&nbsp;this week:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-default\"><p><strong>\u201cI\u2019m not telling you to make the world better, because I don\u2019t think that progress is necessarily part of the package. I\u2019m just telling you to live in it. Not just to endure it, not just to suffer it, not just to pass through it, but to live in it. To look at it. To try to get the picture. To live recklessly. To take chances. To make your own work and take pride in it. To seize the moment.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only that but Robin Williams came back to life this week, too (at least on Amazon Prime&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Dead-Poets-Society-Robin-Williams\/dp\/B00AOB3XHC\/ref=sr_1_1?crid=37ZSRVF8Z2NXS&amp;keywords=dead+poets+society&amp;qid=1641176307&amp;s=instant-video&amp;sprefix=dead+poets+society%2Cinstant-video%2C66&amp;sr=1-1\" target=\"_blank\">video<\/a>), to star in&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dead_Poets_Society\" target=\"_blank\">Dead Poet\u2019s Society<\/a>&nbsp;and to whisper&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vi0Lbjs5ECI\" target=\"_blank\"><em>carpe diem<\/em>&nbsp;<\/a>in our ears. (Life-tested wisdom on how to live from James Baldwin, Ursula K. On New Year\u2019s Eve, we sat side by side in the near-dark a few minutes before midnight (only the dim glow of a few remaining fairy lights to light our Dickensian faces) and said aloud to each other what our hopes were for the new year.
